Supply and demand I suppose...they wanted 40 bucks for a simple side cover for CB550!

That's not outrageous. They don't make CB550 sidecovers, and they're completely non-essential, so usually someone looking for one is restoring. And CB550s are getting restored these days, they are only getting more valuble. So $40... I'd say get it while you can.

Uhhh, if you seen the shape these side covers were in, you'd say 40 was to high too. And, it goes back to supply and demand...they don't make old harleys or triumphs any more either, but you can damn near build a bike out of re-pop parts. If the demand is high enough someone will recreate the original.

Oh, I also think they are somewhat essential...fuses and batteries exposed to the elements is a no brainer...

fuses and batteries... no big deal. Sidecovers are only for looks. Water runs off the seat and never hits fuses directly, which could corrode I suppose, but since they're aluminum they won't really rust, and batteries can get rained on all day. I left sidecovers off several of my bikes for many miles, back when they were parked outside every day for lack of a garage. Absolutely non esential on a UJM.

$40 isn't too bad... Back when I tried to kill Tom by throwing one of my GS sidecovers at him on I-94, I called Suter's. They wanted $70 for one sidecover. Screw that I said, and cut off the mounts so no sidecover could ever be mounted on my bike again!

Suter's is high on essentials like oil filters and spark plugs too. They're a specialty shop and need to charge higher prices to survive, I suppose. But gouging amateur mechanics on beat up old parts is wrong, IMHO.

Opinions are like assholes...

well, a quick look on ebay and you quickly realize that 40.00 is what it is. seems most of the old side covers have fallen off and shattered (they were brittle when new.) And, there has never been a re-pop part for a honda 550, except for maybe a slip on seat cover, which is universal. Keep in mind, triumphs and harleys have always been collectible, up until about five minutes ago, Hondas were laughed at and in some cases, hung from trees.

That is all true--Ben, Dave and Tom.

This is good news for me. I sold some sidecovers on ebay recently that were pretty good, and I was surprised they took my buy-it-now, which was probably too low. I'm going to sell all my cracked and slightly broken ones too then. I think I have a bunch.
