Couldnt've said it any better myself. Sometimes I feel like a fucking fish swimming up stream in this industry that has mostly gone to shit. But I cant rest on my laurels and have to continue to keep fighting the good fight against the shit ass shit thats out there today. Thanks to Jay for finding this for me.

Dan, it's not just the States man, it's everyfuckinwhere and it shits me to tears !!! The constant dumbing down of the perception of 'quality', talent, originality and hand crafting . . . FUCK !!!! It's not aliens or Commies taking over the world, it's mind numbing flocks of intellectual vampire sheep . . . screw em all, rage against the machine !!!! Tragic !!!
Well put my friend! The problem came with technology, now any asshole that wants to "start his/her own business" can buy a computer and a vinyl cutter and start cranking out total shit and the worst part is the buyer doesnt know any better because their minds have already been diluted with the bullshit people sell these days!
It's just good to hear that anyone at all cares about some details. Sometimes it feels like the whole world's just decided to give up on everything good and just listen to ipods while they ride their cruisers to the strip mall. Aside from that, I especially love old motel signs.
*please note I also hate the homogenization of our state/country/world* but please let me play devils advocate for a second....
A. I think 'designers' can get self righteous and snooty if left unchecked for to long. This guy is entertaining in front of his web cam, but not only is he preaching to the choir, but we all already know that wal-mart has just about completely taken over.
B. As a designer he should know that the fucking customer gets what the customer wants. period. How the fuck does he know that the nice family that is renovating this motel didn't want that blippo bold font and those birds. Maybe their grandkids drew the birds. I make signs, Dan you make signs. Mostly we make signs that are brought to us.
like I said, this was devils advocate here. I would rather see that sign restored myself, there is a ton of neon on that bitch.
that actually came across as snotty in itself, sorry about that! That was not my intention at all, just defending the russian immigrant motel owners.
I'm sure they on a vodka bender, fired up microsoft paint and painstakingly drew up that sign, needing to use a translation dictionary to make sure they spelled it right.
The next morning, while in a hangover haze that only the most toxic potato mash can create, they wrote the check.
guess this video hits pretty close to home.
I love potato vodka.
Yay! Finally someone else playing devils advocate...usually its me and Im left wondering who many people, if any, I offended! BTW no offense taken if you were at all worried
I apologize in advance as this may get wordy...sore subject for me too!
So speaking on the motel design itself, I guess I didnt really pay much attention other than it was yellow and orange. But speaking on what dude is saying I think he hit it on the head personally.
I see this shit day in and day out...I get designs sent to me from other shops, I wont mention any names...ehem Grant and the likes, where the designs are nothing short of terrible. I cant speak on why they are bad, if its lack of well paid talent or just pure greed and laziness but this is a real beef with me. If you're going to charge that kind of coin then put some fucking effort into it even if the customers logo blows donkey dick you can still shine a turd if the motivation is there.
The reality, in the sign world anyways, is that there is so much junk out there that when said family sits down to design their own sign they think it looks great because its no better than the one next door...its a machine that keeps perpetuating itself.
Fuck I could go on for hours with this debate..but I have better things to do like burn this bone with the wifey on the couch!
Don't forget that most people don't understand anything about design. This does not mean that effective design won't work on the uninformed viewer, just that they don't understand why it looks good, and if not presented with good design, will approve of any silly crap they see. That's why they pay someone else to design. It's not their job to understand good design, or even really appreciate it, but they still deserve it if they paid for it. And we all have to look at it.
