Herbie and beak less roosters

I was fortunate enough to get a chance to get out of my current environment for a couple days and go up to Heidelberg Germany to a conference. There was a catch. I had to brief a room full of high ranking officers. I was willing to deal with "the suck" just to get this chance...because it just so happened my daughter was back in Germany visiting friends. I haven't seen her for a couple of years due to military life. After my first day of the conference, I drove an hour and a half to head over to Ramstein/Landstuhl to pick her up and spend a few hours together. I averaged 115mph on the Autobahn and made it there in no time. It was pretty epic. We had some dinner and hung out and laughed at people...just like old times, but time ran short and I had to get up early so I headed back to the Heidelberg area later that night. The second day I gave my short brief to the officers in the afternoon and went downtown Heidelberg to check it out afterwards. Probably the most beautiful place I've ever been...and I was able to have a few beers. Here is das pictures.

No sign of Dean Jones or Lindsay Lohan...

Enjoying some looooong brats...

I was a little nervous when this crew of rough necks came rolling through...Heidelberg segway gang.

Night cap...fresh pretzel and Hefenweizen

I returned back to my deployment today and stopped to pick these up enroute from the airport. The locals pay less attention to detail and given instructions than normal people in the states do in my opinion. I've noticed a pattern here, and this is just one example. There is velcro on the back though I told them not to put velcro on it, the border was done in white though I asked for black, and this version of the rooster is completely beak less tough they had a picture to work off of. My barracks roommate said maybe the rooster is looking right at you in this version.

Good day...

....are days like this. Its the small things like a DVD to keep my mind occupied and daydreaming about coming home and hanging out with my friends, dog, and last and absolutely not least...my wife. It just makes things normal for a minute, I'm not sure if that makes sense to most. Anyway...definitely worth watching 6OVER. I was pretty happy that the box with it and the GKM made it all the way over to this side of the world. The other odd "Living on the Edge" DVD came in a care package from Wisconsin. Pretty cheesy...and I watched as much as I could until I was bored which was about 15 minutes in, but I was stoked that these dudes made this video and sent it overseas.

Banksy and London Eye

I made Amy go check out some Banksy work. It's close the the hotel... It's been raining most of the day so we are just hanging out inside.

I left a gift but I'm sure it fell off 10 minutes after I left.

The London Eye...Amy and I in the "photo zone"

A link to how he did it here.

Depleted uranium...

...looks so nice with flowers growing out of it. Stumbled onto this bombed out Russian T-72 or Serb M-84 tank and found a DPR sticker on the bumper. Huh. Didn't know they were fans.
Someone come over and help me get that turbo charger out of there...I think its still usable.

Spent the day in the mountains

Clouds were fucking me up. Out by Prizeren. Low threat and the people don't hate us out this way, so we stop for coffee at the cigarette restaurant and can enjoy it a little more.

Waffle House

The aviators make waffles on Sundays and the proceeds go to helping local children. Its donation only and they call it the "Waffle House". There hasn't been a cease and desist from using the name yet as far as I know. Eat waffles made by Blackhawk pilots right next to the mechanics working on the choppa's.

Today's images...

Went to a different gate along the ABL (Administrative Boundary Line) and talked with the EULEX police and a Serbian that was translating for the people that didn't speak the language...good conversations and interesting stories over some Turkish coffee about the war and working along the ABL. There are several other Germans and French military here, but the EULEX people run the gate. I have a picture of me standing on the ABL (between Kosovo and Serbia), but this top one is looking down from a hill top. You can see Serbia down below. They have a road block setup right around the corner so no one can come through here at all.
The Germans have the coolest trucks...
Also went to Mount Goles. This was a strategic and a military base for the Yugoslavian military and whoever has owned this area during any war here. This was a bombed out Yugo military building. DPR sticker left in the bathroom...
