American as it gets...

Shoe repair people are true craftsmen.

Too bad most Red Wing boots are currently made in China, or assembled in the US with foreign components, and aren't the repairable sole type.

Hmmmm....I've had 2 pairs, both say materials and labor made in the USA. I know some of their cheaper brands they have under them (Irish Setter, Worx, etc.) are Chinese made. I know a company out of MN makes a boot that look like Redwing's and they actually get their leather from the leather plant in Redwing MN. Can't remember their name...

I have American made Redwings too, had em for 14 years and going strong. But Redwing, like most US and European shoe companies, has outsourced large portions of their product line to China, where workers don't enjoy the same rights as us and get paid far less. I take exception to a company boasting about their American pride when they are so clearly willing to fuck over workers here and in China to reduce their bottom line. Profit as a prime mover always ends up screwing someone over.

Well, they haven't moved all of their product line to China, and by reading that article I posted directly quoting the president of Red Wing, they have started moving alot of the operations back to the US that were moved there during the recession. I still consider TREK an American company even though their cheaper line of bikes are completely Chinese made. In my eyes it would be completely different if Red Wing claimed to be a US company and made ALL of there products in China. I have 2 pairs of Red Wings I've purchased in the past 2 years and both say "Made in the US of US products", and of course I had a pair in the early 90's that were steel toe and made in the US. There are so few companies that purely make products just in America anymore. You just have to do some research and make sure you are buying the product made in the US. Thats what matters to me, making sure we sustain our work force and seeing this country prosper. Absolutely...FUCK FREE TRADE!

I guess I should re-phrase my post title then...

"American as it gets (except a few Chinese pairs thrown in there)..."

Devil's advocate says: when you buy a product from a company that thinks it's OK to screw workers to make a bigger profit, you are telling that company that you think it's OK to screw workers too. Regardless of whether the product you buy was made here or there, the rich a-holes get your money.

Incidentally I'm a hypocrite on this point. My life is full of crap that was made by companies who consider the bottom line more important that people. But I just had to have it because I am a big fat bourgeois American pig.
